Summary from November 20/18 Toastmaster’s Meeting “Oh, the Places You’ll Go!”

Submitted by Edith B.

For awhile it looked like Lingo Advanced Communicators’ Meeting theme was going to be its “word of the day - shambolic.” Thank you Grammarian Eileen for such a unique word!

With the meeting theme in mind, our very own Dr. Dave travelled a great distance to be our Toastmaster for the evening. He truly lived up to these words from the best-seller and still favourite graduation gift. ....
“You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
any direction you choose ...”

We were delighted that the little guy with the yellow hat (Dr. Dave), book in tow, became our direction and lead us through our meeting.

Playing in our Playground – Interpretive Reading & Storytelling

Submitted by Edith B.

“I have a dream ..” by Dan Mc, Lingo Advanced Communicators’ VP Education. No, he was not referring to his dream of Lingo being back to Charter strength. Dan was “playing in our playground” at Revera Riverbend (103 Rabbit Hill Court) when he recited the Oratorical Speech, I Have a Dream by Martin Luther King Jr. for Project #5 from the Interpretive Reading Advanced Manual.

Facilitator Edith B. led Lingo’s November 6th workshop on this manual, while also referring to the differences and similarities to projects in the Storytelling Advanced Manual. For Project #1, Edith read two books written by her son, Jay, for his sons about their dogs. She noted how voice infliction and pauses help convey the meaning and emotions portrayed in books. For Project #2, Eileen S. read Alfred Noyes’ poem The Highwayman. She used excellent vocal techniques in presenting catchy rhythms and vivid imagery in this tale of love and sacrifice.  Is she a practicing choral member? For Project #4, Melanie K. sat on a blanket on the floor, to represent a bed in a seedy motel, surrounded by a Halloween haul.  She was able to vocally, physically and emotionally keep the main characters, Bev, M&M and Snickers, somewhat distinct when reading the play, The Chocolate Affair by Stephanie Allison Walker. You needed to hear and see it to believe it!

General Evaluator Dave C. called upon speech evaluators, Estella M., Cherry C., and Kerrianne K-M., who all pointed out the well done parts of each of these projects and some suggestions to enhance the projects.  Dan won Best Speaker and his evaluator Kerrianne won Best Evaluator.

Edith closed the workshop by playing a two-minute audio of a storytelling/monodrama (Project #3) regarding her Greater Edmonton Alberta Health Services Advisory Council volunteer role.  Members were touched.

Dave noted that Lingo Toastmasters are so masterful in presenting workshops that they should be videoed.  However, Toastmasters may want to experience the workshops personally like guest Ester did. Watch D99 Fanpage/Eventbrite for details on the December 4th workshop How to Run Effective Meetings led by Eileen S. Dave C. will be Toastmaster at our November 20th meeting, Oh the Places You’ll Go (Dr. Seuss), a favourite childhood author of several members. Come join us.
